5 tips for maintaining the right balance

Often our thoughts and feelings influence what happens to our bodies due to the explicit interdependence of mind and body. This is called the Mind Body connection.

We experience our feelings directly impacting our physical health, and vice versa. We meet people who say: “I don’t feel well, I don’t feel like eating”, “I’m not hungry because I’m not in the mood or I feel low emotionally or depressed”. Additional examples of the Mind-Body connection are people experiencing panic attacks sweating or shaking, and those under stress complaining of fatigue. Such instances narrate the connection between mental and physical health.

An imbalance between one’s physical and mental health is also found to be linked to serious illnesses such as cancer and long-term cardiovascular and respiratory health problems. Similarly, about one in three people with chronic physical health conditions experience mental health problems, which can impair the immune system and cause sleep disturbances.

Tips to maintain the Mind Body connection

1. Regular exercise:

Physical activity is an excellent option to stay fit and healthy while improving mental well-being, contributing to the correct Mind-Body connection. One can also participate in sports, dance, yoga, or other daily physical activities. You can’t ignore the benefits of regular exercise for improving metabolism, improving mood, and increasing energy and alertness.

2. Healthy eating habits:

We all know the saying: “You are what you eat”. A healthy and nutritious diet helps keep the body and mind healthy. Following a good diet plan, such as eating fresh, healthy foods and mindful eating, contributes to good health.

3. Restful sleep:

Deep sleep at night helps to relax the body, de-stress the mind, relieve stress and calm the mind.

4. Give up bad habits:

Gradual steps should be taken every day to get rid of bad habits. It could be smoking, drinking alcohol, eating junk food, or spending too much time in front of the screen. Regulating our habits will help make the body and mind healthier.

5. Develop good habits:

We should try to engage in activities that help calm the mind and improve focus. One can take up journal writing to reflect on the day. Practicing meditation helps relieve stress, thus improving mental and physical health. One should focus more on positive emotions than negative ones.
