Yoga is meant to make you healthy and strong. Since time immemorial, yoga has been shown to be beneficial for many physical and mental ailments. It is supposed to work on your health from the inside out and give you glowing, radiant skin. However, doing yoga for skin care may be something you should consider.

To learn how to reap the benefits of yoga for your skin, Health Shots spoke with Samiksha Shetty, a celebrity yoga expert and founder of the Moon Village wellness community space.

Shetty says, “Yoga and skin care can sometimes be intertwined with each other. Since one of the benefits of doing yoga is getting a bright and healthy looking skin. There are many reasons that can cause the skin to be affected, namely an unhealthy gut and stress. Yoga can curb these health issues on the inside and impart a radiant, healthy glow to your face.”

Here are some yoga asanas for skin care:

1. Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)

This skincare yoga pose works effectively to give you a radiant complexion. Practicing this pose regularly helps put intense pressure on the abdominal region, which in turn helps detoxify the body. This pose increases circulation to the face and pelvic region. It releases the tension of the abdomen and strengthens it. Regular practice of this asana strengthens the reproductive organs. It also helps relieve indigestion and constipation. By maintaining a healthy gut, dhanurasana helps give you a healthy, glowing skin appearance.

* Lie face down on the floor. Bend your legs at the knee keeping your knee hip-width apart. Extend your hands behind you and grab your ankles from the outside.
* Inhale, and lift your entire body off the ground by balancing on your navel
* Exhale and slowly release the position.

2. Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)

This is a beautiful asana to stretch your spine, shoulders, and hamstrings. It releases stress on the lower back and also improves digestion, which can otherwise cause many skin conditions like pimples and acne. Not only is this pose beneficial for reducing stress, but it also purifies the blood, improves skin complexion, and reduces the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles. Paschimottasana is a perfect yoga for skin care.

How to do this yoga asana

* Begin by sitting on the floor with your legs stretched out in front of you.
* Place your feet together and flex your feet toward you. Inhale, straighten the spine up.
* Exhale, lean your upper body forward, bending at the hips, keeping your spine straight as you lean forward.

3. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

Shetty says, “This asana helps to relax the entire body. It strengthens the arms and shoulders, lengthens the spine, calves and hamstrings, and energizes the entire body by bringing blood flow to the brain and face.” This asana improves blood circulation in those areas and gives you flushed and healthy cheeks.

How to do this yoga asana

* Start on the floor by placing your hands and knees down.
* Stretch your legs by lifting your knees off the ground and push your heels down as far as you can. Extend your spine away from the floor with the palms of your hands.
* Stay in the pose for 5 to 9 breaths

4. Fish Pose (Matsyasana)

Fish pose is one of the backbend poses that can be easily performed even by a beginner. This is one of the best yoga poses to achieve fresh and toned skin as it improves blood circulation in the head region.

How to do this yoga asana

* Sit in a Padmasana yoga pose.
* Slowly lean back and place your head on the floor.
* As you touch the ground with the top of your head, lift your chest up.
Hold the pose for a few seconds.

5. Plow Pose (Halasana)

This yoga pose is effective in improving the overall blood circulation of the body. It induces a sense of calm and puts you in a relaxed state of mind, making it a perfect yoga pose for skincare.

“This pose is beneficial for inducing sleep or combating insomnia, considering the fact that poor sleep cycle is one of the main reasons behind poor skin conditions. All of these positive effects of this asana are reflected on your skin,” adds Shetty.

How to do this yoga asana

* Lie on your back, palms facing the ceiling.
* Gently raise your legs to ninety degrees and bring them over your head to touch the flour.
* Hold the pose for a minute, return to normal position

6. Shoulder stand (Sarvangasana)

This would be an intermediate level pose that has amazing skin and glow benefits. Mastering this pose is not too difficult, regular practice helps improve blood circulation in the facial region, which helps combat skin conditions such as facial dullness, acne, and wrinkles.

How to do this yoga asana

* Lie on your back, facing the ceiling.
* Gently lift your legs and hips up, supporting your back with your hands.
* Stay in the position for a few minutes; return to normal position.
