Hair care can be quite difficult at times as there are many major factors that affect hair including weather, pollution, lack of care and poor diet. Most men and women begin to develop gray hair even before the age of 30. Stress and nutrient deficiency are two of the main causes of hair loss and premature graying of hair.
Your hair can naturally gray as you age, but premature graying of hair can be combated with a good lifestyle. In addition to a balanced diet, some homemade hair packs can help reduce the appearance of gray hair.
Health Shots spoke with Dr. Monica Kapoor, a celebrity cosmetologist and director of FLAWLESS Cosmetic clinics and the ILACAD Institute, about some effective gray hair packs made with homemade ingredients.
7 hair packs to reduce gray hair:
1. Amla Hair Bundle
Amla is a popular superfood that is a rich source of vitamin C and can help boost immunity and stop cell damage. Just like its health benefits, amla is also beneficial for skin and hair. Dr. Kapoor says, “Amla contains calcium and reduces oxidative stress which helps promote healthy hair and treat premature graying.”
To make the hair pack, take a bunch of curry leaves and mash them with 2 tablespoons of amla powder and 2 tablespoons of brahmi powder. Make a smooth paste and apply this paste like a hair mask to your hair, making sure to cover the roots. Leave on for an hour and rinse with a mild herbal shampoo.
2. Potato hair pack
Potatoes are loaded with antioxidants that can help darken hair and thus cover grays. While yogurt is a good probiotic that can promote healthy hair and help treat premature graying of hair.
To make a potato and curd face mask, take potato juice and 3 tablespoons of curd. Heat a pan and boil some potatoes. After a few minutes, strain the water and keep the potatoes. Next, add 3 tablespoons of curd into the potato juice and mix well. Then apply it to the hair strands and scalp for gray hair strands and then rinse it off after some time.
3. Shikakai hair mask
Shikakai powder has been used in Ayurveda for a long time for healthy hair. It is a natural shampoo and an effective way to reduce gray hair. Regular use will lead to a healthier scalp and hair growth.
“Make a paste of shikakai powder and yogurt and rub it into your scalp. Wash off after half an hour to naturally darken gray hair,” says Dr. Kapoor.
4. Tulsi Hair Bundle
Tulsi is a good source of vitamin C and has been used as an Ayurvedic remedy to treat hair problems for many years. On the other hand, black tea is full of tannic acid that can help darken hair effectively. Natural homemade tulsi and black tea hair masks are a good way to cover gray hair.
To make this hair pack, take black tea leaves and tulsi leaves. Then put 4 tablespoons of ground black tea in a pan and add 4-5 tulsi leaves and boil them together. After that, let it cool down and wash your hair with this water. Apply this mask twice a week to darken your gray hair.
5. Henna hair pack
Henna is a natural colorant and conditioner and when combined with coffee it gives excellent results. Henna is, in fact, an ancient home remedy to turn gray hair black.
To make a henna hair pack, add 1 tablespoon of coffee powder to boiling water. Once it is well boiled, cool it down and make a paste with henna powder. Let stand covered for a few hours. Mix 1 tablespoon of any oil of your choice and apply it all over your hair completely. Wait a few hours and then wash it off.
6. Black tea mask
Black tea is another effective ingredient that can help prevent gray hair. Take tea infusion, about 200 ml, and use it as a leave-in conditioner on hair after shampooing.
You can also steep black tea leaves for 2 hours in warm water and grind them to a smooth paste. Mix with a little lemon juice and apply it as a hair mask for 40 minutes before rinsing your hair.
