Have you ever felt that your thoughts are taking over your life? Or that you think deeply and repeatedly too much? Well, if that’s the case, you’re currently dealing with a pattern of overthinking. Overthinking is common and people with stress often experience this condition. It involves thinking negative thoughts, dwelling on the past, and worrying about the future.

Overthinking can easily become a daily habit if you don’t take steps to control it. And this habit not only affects your emotional health, but can also put your mental and physical health at risk.

Dr. Narayan Gadkar, Cardiologist, Zen Multispeciality Hospital, spoke with HealthShots about the impact of overthinking on overall health.

According to Dr. Gadkar, overthinking leads to these 6 health problems:

1. Overthinking leads to high blood pressure

If you constantly overthink, doing so will rob you of your peace of mind. It can invite stress that can further increase your blood pressure and make you susceptible to heart problems like stroke or heart attack. High stress means high cholesterol levels, and you can also engage in unhealthy habits, like smoking and drinking alcohol, that can wreak havoc on your overall well-being.

2. Overthinking can cause sleep problems.

Do you try hard, but your endless thoughts keep you awake? Well, facing trouble sleeping is one of the known effects of overthinking. Therefore, if you think too much, you will not be able to sleep well at night. And you’ll end up feeling groggy, cranky, and fatigued the next morning. This will make it difficult for you to concentrate on your work, lower your productivity, and cause you to overeat by gaining too much weight.

3. Overthinking will suppress your appetite

Even overthinking for a short period of time can lead to a loss of appetite. Because it keeps your brain busy and doesn’t pass the signal to the brain that you’re hungry or it’s time to eat. Dr. Gadkar says, “If you’re stressed from overthinking, you may not eat or overeat. Both habits are harmful to health.

4. Overthinking will have an impact on the brain

Overthinking changes the structure and connectivity of the brain and leads to mood disorders, which can lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety, stress and depression. Also, it can decrease your energy to concentrate and can affect your power to solve problems and make decisions.

5. Affects the digestive system

Stress from overthinking can affect your digestive health because it decreases the amount of blood flow and oxygen to your stomach. Stress due to overthinking results in gastrointestinal problems like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

6. It will weaken the immune system

If you are stressed, the hormone cortisol is released in your body, which in turn weakens your immune system and puts you at higher risk for allergies, infections, and illness.

3. Write It Down: Keep a journal and write down what you’re thinking.

4. Share your worries: If you are someone with whom you can share your fears and worries, share them. This will release your load.

5. Let go of the past: If the cause of your overthinking is thinking about your past, let it go. Whatever the case, accept it and move on.

6. Breathing exercises: Practicing breathing exercises to reduce stress levels and stop excessive thinking is the best solution. You can also meditate.

7. Stay in the present: Leave your past and live in the present. Also, do not stay between your past, present or future. Enjoy your present moments.

Last but not least, don’t be hard on yourself. Set the time to allow yourself to think too much, this will help you to limit the time of the duration in which you think too much.
