Has it ever happened to you that you went to bed feeling perfectly fine but woke up with a frozen shoulder the next day? The excruciating pain and the inability to move your arms and lift anything is an unpleasant experience. Well, some of this can be attributed to your sleeping position, but there are a lot of bad things at play.
To learn about the causes of frozen shoulder and ways to treat it, Health Shots contacted Dr. Ashwini Marathe, Head of Physiotherapy Operations at Phyt.Health (India’s first AI-assisted digital physiotherapy platform).
Dr. Marathe says, “Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is a common ailment that affects the ball and socket joint of the shoulder. Its impact is quite severe and worsens if not treated in time. It usually affects those between the ages of 40 and 60 and those with diabetes, thyroid and heart problems. Women suffer more than men.
What are the symptoms of a frozen shoulder?
Patients suffer from pain, stiffness and stiffness of the shoulder. Early symptoms include the inability to raise the arms above the head and to stretch the arms backwards or forwards. Simple arm movements suffer after being impacted. It does not affect any other joints in the body.
“Those who suffer from frozen shoulders go through three stages. The first is painful frostbite. The second is frozen or sticky. The thawing stage comes next. The cause of this disabling disorder is unknown. Recovery occurs in most cases, although some limitations may remain in some cases. says Dr Marathe
How can a frozen shoulder be treated?
According to Dr. Marathe, “There are a variety of treatments available, including physical therapy and medicinal treatments such as intra-articular corticosteroid injections, arthroscopic capsular release, and surgery. Doctors, however, are limited to recommending drugs to treat the disease. When the condition does not improve and leads to disability after 3 to 6 months, surgery is required.”
However, choosing traditional methods helps most of the time. Improvements in a frozen shoulder condition are seen only with the help of correct exercises and physical therapy.
Most medical professionals prefer to suggest physical therapy to relieve the patient of a frozen shoulder. Some stretching exercises can also help decrease stress on the affected shoulder.
If you have a frozen shoulder, these exercises will ease the pain:
1. Pendulum exercise
* Bend close to the waist and let the arm hang down from the body in a relaxed manner.
* Move your body in a circle while letting your arm move from the joint near the shoulder.
* Keep making small movements while the shoulder is relaxed. Keep doing this for 2-3 minutes.
2. Table arm sliders
* Take a seat in a chair next to a table. Raise and position the affected arm with the unaffected arm. Rest your hand and forearm on the table.
* Lean forward from the waist using your body weight. Let your arm and hand slide forward.
*Stay in this position for 5-10 seconds. Using the same motion, slide back to the upright position.
3. Wall slide
* Stand up and face the wall. Keep both palms against the wall.
* Move your hands up the wall. All hands and arms should also move up.
* Keep doing this stretch for 15-20 seconds.

6. Towel stretch
* Pick up the towel with your unaffected hand and drop it behind your back.
* Move your affected arm slowly behind your back and grasp the towel.
* Pull the towel gently up. This movement helps the affected arm rise and stretch. Keep doing this for a few minutes a day.
With the proper guidance, frozen shoulder sufferers will be able to live their lives with little to no pain. They don’t have to carry the frozen weight on their shoulders.
